Calls for leadership transformation intensify in UML

KATHMANDU: A detailed appeal has been made public within CPN-UML demanding broad transformation, generational change, and organizational restructuring under the banner “Revival Campaign 2082 for UML Transformation and Restructuring.”

The appeal, addressed as “Respected Comrade,” states that Nepal’s communist movement has reached one of the most serious crises in its history. It argues that the party has gradually lost public appeal and become weaker in parliamentary politics.

Referring to the political legacy of Pushpa Lal Shrestha, Manmohan Adhikari, and Madan Bhandari, the appeal expresses respect for the current leadership while claiming that internal democracy has weakened, institutional decision-making has been affected, and younger generations are increasingly distancing themselves from UML.

According to the document, the results of the 2082 election showed a decline in the party’s support base, and it accuses the leadership of not taking moral responsibility for that outcome.

The appeal also claims that ideological discussion has narrowed, organizational momentum has weakened, and frustration and migration among young people have increased. It argues that these developments should not simply be dismissed as opposition narratives.

With local elections approaching, the document warns that entering elections without addressing dissatisfaction among younger members, organizational stagnation, and current working practices could cause serious political setbacks.

It further states that arrogance and pride have seriously damaged the dream of working-class liberation and calls for an immediate campaign of transformation and restructuring. Leadership change is presented as the first requirement of reform.

Among the proposals mentioned in the appeal are direct election of party leadership and candidates by party members, limiting individuals to a maximum of two terms in the same position, allowing only graduate-level members to serve in policy-making bodies, and ensuring committee representation of 60 percent existing members and 40 percent from a new generation.

The appeal also emphasizes transparent leadership and argues that combining the experience of senior leaders with the energy of younger generations is necessary to revive the movement.

It concludes by stating that UML’s transformation and generational transition are not only internal party matters but are also connected to Nepal’s nationalism, sovereignty, and prosperity, warning that failure to change in time could weaken Nepal’s communist movement in the long run.
