KATHMANDU: All seven provincial governments of Nepal are presenting their annual budgets for the upcoming fiscal year 2026/27 today (Monday). In line with constitutional and legal provisions, the provincial assemblies will table their budgets on the same day.
The Constitution of Nepal mandates the federal government to present its budget on 15 Jestha. Similarly, the Intergovernmental Fiscal Arrangement Act requires provincial governments to present their budgets on 1 Ashar, while local governments are required to do so by 10 Ashar.
Like the federal government, the provinces have prepared their new budgets with a focus on good governance, agriculture, education, health, and infrastructure development.
Provincial budgets are typically formulated after the federal budget is made public on 15 Jestha, as provinces align their priorities and allocations accordingly.
However, the implementation of budgets in most provinces during the current fiscal year has been less than satisfactory, with concerns raised over weak spending capacity and low expenditure performance.
