BIRGUNJ: A 20-year-old civil engineer and entrepreneur from Birgunj has expressed his intention to contest the upcoming mayoral election of Birgunj Metropolitan City, outlining his experiences, observations of urban challenges, and vision for the city’s development.
Mohammad Aftab Sheikh, who identifies as a rapper, civil engineering diploma holder, and former startup founder, said his decision to enter local politics is based on what he describes as long-standing governance and development gaps in the metropolitan city.
Sheikh, who has lived in Birgunj for generations in his family, said the city holds significant economic importance as Nepal’s key trade gateway with India but continues to face issues related to infrastructure, public services, and urban management. He argued that while multiple administrations have come to power, expected improvements in basic urban services have not been fully achieved.
In his remarks, he emphasized that leadership should be based on service delivery rather than position or political affiliation. He stated that local government should prioritize practical solutions, accountability, and direct engagement with citizens rather than symbolic commitments.
Sheikh also reflected on his personal journey, noting his involvement in music, short films, and social awareness content creation from a young age. He said he has also worked briefly in entrepreneurship, including a local grocery delivery service in Birgunj, and is currently engaged in developing technology-based ideas and writing projects.
He said these experiences have contributed to his understanding of social and urban issues, while also shaping his interest in public service. His profile has previously been featured in youth recognition platforms and media outlets.
Highlighting urban challenges in Birgunj, he pointed to issues such as unemployment, irregular infrastructure development, waste management, drainage problems, limited access to quality healthcare and education, and migration of youth abroad. He also mentioned concerns related to corruption, service delivery delays, and environmental degradation.
Sheikh stated that if elected, he would prioritize improvements in sanitation, drainage systems, water supply, healthcare services, road infrastructure, public transport, employment generation, and digital governance systems.
He also mentioned river cleaning efforts, urban beautification projects, and support for startups and youth-focused programs as part of his proposed priorities.
He added that his broader vision is to develop Birgunj into a cleaner, more organized, and economically vibrant city with improved public services and stronger urban infrastructure.
The announcement comes ahead of the local election cycle, as potential candidates begin positioning themselves in major metropolitan cities across the country.
