Rainfall hits western Nepal as weather system moves east

KATHMANDU: Western Nepal woke up to rainfall on Sunday as a low-pressure system triggered showers across the region. The system is now moving eastward, bringing cloudy skies, fog, and scattered rainfall to hilly and mountainous districts.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the rainfall has occurred due to the influence of a western low-pressure system.

Information Officer Dinkar Kayastha said it has been raining since morning in districts including Dadeldhura, Doti, Achham, Bajura, Bajhang, Gulmi, Kaski, Tanahun, Palpa, Arghakhanchi and Manang. He added that the rain-bearing system has now reached Chitwan.

The Department’s Weather Forecasting Division stated that the system that developed in the western region is gradually moving eastward. According to Kayastha, 17 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in Gulmi and 11 millimetres in Tanahun within the past hour, and rainfall is continuing.

Nepal is currently under the influence of the western low-pressure system, he said. As a result, the weather remains generally cloudy in Madhesh, Bagmati, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, while Koshi and Gandaki provinces are partly cloudy.

The Department also reported fog in some parts of the Tarai and the Kathmandu Valley.

According to the weather bulletin issued by the Department, hilly and mountainous areas of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, as well as Koshi and Bagmati provinces, will experience generally cloudy conditions, while the remaining areas will see partly cloudy weather.

The Department has also forecast moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in some mountainous areas of the country, with snowfall possible in a few places.

Similarly, moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is likely in some hilly areas of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, in a few locations in Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, and at one or two places in the Tarai region of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces.

Kayastha added that cloudy weather is expected to persist for the next few days.
