Trump says US–Iran deal set for Sunday signing as Tehran questions timing

WASHINGTON DC: US President Donald Trump has announced that an agreement aimed at ending tensions between the United States and Iran is expected to be signed on Sunday, despite Iran expressing uncertainty about the proposed timeline.

In a social media post, Trump stated that the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes, would be accessible to all nations once the agreement is finalized.

Pakistan, which has played a significant mediating role in the negotiations, also indicated that the deal could be completed within the next 24 hours and said preparations were underway for an electronic signing ceremony.

However, before Trump’s announcement, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei urged caution regarding the schedule. He noted that while a memorandum of understanding was expected, it would not be signed the following day and that the exact date remained uncertain.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump said, “The deal is scheduled to be signed tomorrow, and immediately afterward, the Strait of Hormuz will be open to everyone.”

Referring to Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium, Trump added that once conditions were stable, the United States would retrieve what he called the “nuclear dust,” which would later be destroyed.

For many years, Western governments have accused Iran of pursuing nuclear weapons capabilities. Iran has consistently denied these allegations, maintaining that its nuclear activities are intended solely for peaceful purposes such as electricity generation and scientific research.

Trump also warned that if the negotiations failed to progress “quickly, easily, and smoothly,” the United States had “the ultimate alternative,” which he hoped would never need to be used again.

Earlier on Saturday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed optimism, saying that the parties were closer than ever to reaching a peace agreement.

Sharif wrote on X that Pakistan was preparing for the electronic signing of the accord, which was likely to be finalized within a day, followed by technical discussions the following week.

On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi also indicated that an agreement with Washington was within reach.

According to Araghchi, the proposed deal would include measures to end hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
