NC special general convention: Election for leadership today

KATHMANDU: The schedule for electing new leadership of the Nepali Congress (NC) has been announced at the party’s special general convention currently underway in Kathmandu.

The election committee, formed under the convention, has set the deadline for candidate nominations at 9:15 am today. “Remaining election procedures will commence immediately afterward,” said Sitaram KC, senior advocate and coordinator of the committee.

Voting will be conducted according to the party’s prevailing statute for the posts of one president, two vice presidents, two general secretaries, eight joint general secretaries, and 121 central members.

The five-member election committee, coordinated by senior advocate KC, was formed as per the special general convention’s working procedures.

A total of 4,635 general convention delegates are eligible to vote for the party’s new leadership.

The special general convention, initiated jointly by General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Biswaprakash Sharma, has been ongoing since January 11. Originally scheduled for two days, it was extended to allow additional time for negotiations with the party’s establishment faction, which opposed the convention called by over 50 percent of delegates.
