KATHMANDU: Nepal is unlikely to experience prolonged heavy rainfall over the next three days as the monsoon low-pressure trough has shifted south of its average position, according to the Weather Forecasting Division under the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
The Division said the position of the monsoon trough plays an important role in determining the intensity and distribution of rainfall across Nepal. As the trough is currently located farther south than its usual position, rainfall is expected to be comparatively lower in most parts of the country.
The southward shift does not mean that rainfall will stop altogether. However, when the monsoon trough moves farther away from Nepal, rainfall generally becomes less intense, according to the Division. It said there is currently no indication of prolonged and heavy rainfall associated with the monsoon system.
The Division said local weather systems and winds could still trigger rainfall in various parts of the country, particularly during the afternoon and evening.
The area extending from Delhi to Kolkata in India is considered the average position of the monsoon trough. When the trough shifts north of this position and moves closer to Nepal, the likelihood and intensity of rainfall increase. At present, however, the trough has moved farther south.
The Division said there is little likelihood of prolonged and heavy rainfall of the type generally associated with a northward shift of the monsoon system over the next three days. Localised rainfall, however, remains possible across the country.
According to the weather bulletin issued by the Department, the country will remain generally cloudy during the afternoon. Moderate to heavy rain or snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely at some places in the Himalayan and hilly regions.
Similar weather conditions are expected at some places in the Terai areas of Koshi, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces, as well as at a few places in the Terai areas of Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces. Heavy rainfall is also possible at some places in the Himalayan and hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, and at one or two places in the hilly areas of Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.
During the night, generally cloudy conditions are expected across the country. Moderate to heavy rain or snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely at some places in the Himalayan region, while similar rainfall is possible at some places in the hilly areas.
Moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is also likely at some places in the Terai areas of Madhesh and Koshi provinces and at a few places in the Terai areas of Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces. Heavy rainfall is possible at one or two places in the Terai areas of Koshi Province.
