Police have launched an investigation after privately registered cars were found parked unattended at the entrances of several media organizations in Kathmandu. Vehicles with private number plates were found parked outside the offices of Onlinekhabar and Himalaya Television in Buddhanagar and Baneshwor, and Kantipur Media Group in Tinkune.

Fresh questions have emerged over possible government links to the mysterious parking of vehicles outside media houses, public locations and the residence of Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa, after a series of social media posts and eyewitness accounts surfaced following Monday’s incidents. Vehicles were left blocking the entrances of several media outlets, public places and Thapa’s residence before the drivers disappeared. By Monday evening, the person who parked a vehicle outside Onlinekhabar was identified as Sujan Poudel, the brother of Sunil Poudel. While the owners of some of the other vehicles have been identified, the identities of those who parked them remain unknown.

Inflation nearly doubles to 5.22% as remittances, forex reserves hit record highs
Nepal’s annual inflation rate nearly doubled in the month of Jestha compared to a year ago, even as the country’s external sector strengthened with record remittance inflows, a soaring balance of payments surplus and the highest-ever foreign exchange reserves. According to the Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation Report released by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Monday, year-on-year consumer inflation rose to 5.22 percent in Jestha (mid-June), up from 2.72 percent in the same month last year. However, the average inflation rate for the first 11 months of the current fiscal year stood at 2.89 percent, down from 4.24 percent during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.

Ganesh Nepali cremated at Pashupati Aryaghat

Profits decline at six commercial banks despite sector-wide growth
Nepal’s banking sector recorded a 19.62 percent increase in net profit during the first 11 months of the current fiscal year, but six commercial banks reported a decline in earnings compared to the same period last year. According to financial statements up to mid-June (Jestha), the banks that posted lower profits were NIC Asia Bank, Prabhu Bank, NIMB Bank, Standard Chartered Bank Nepal, Everest Bank, and Global IME Bank.
Passport Department completes transfer of 10 million records to new system
The Department of Passports under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has successfully completed the transfer of nearly 10 million passport-related records to a new passport production and management system, marking the largest data migration project in Nepal’s history. The department began providing services through the new system from Sunday after securely transferring the details of around 10 million Nepali citizens.
