KATHMANDU: Tokha Municipality has taken action against 46 businesses during a market monitoring campaign launched to protect consumer interests and improve market management.
The monitoring was conducted across all 11 wards of the municipality from May 8 in accordance with the Tokha Municipality Market Monitoring Guidelines, 2075.
The inspection team included representatives from the municipality, municipal police, Central Animal Disease Research Laboratory, Veterinary Quality and Drug Regulation Laboratory, Animal Service Office, Tokha Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Consumer Interest Protection Forum.
According to Tokha’s Chief Administrative Officer, Kamal Bhattarai, the monitoring revealed that many businesses were operating without proper registration or renewal.
Bhattarai said the inspection also found that many shops failed to display price lists, were selling expired goods, and lacked proper hygiene standards, particularly meat shops. In several cases, even minimum operational standards were not being followed.
The municipality stated that 39 fish and meat shops, dairy stores, veterinary medicine shops, handicraft shops, and food outlets were issued warnings. Six businesses were fined amounts ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 50,000, while one shop was shut down.
