Protest held outside Bir Hospital demanding justice for Ganesh Nepali
Family members, friends and supporters of Ganesh Nepali staged a protest outside Bir Hospital on Saturday, demanding justice following his death during treatment after a self-immolation attempt. The protesters called on the government to conduct an impartial investigation into the incident and take legal action against those found responsible. The demonstration was attended by former Dalit Constituent Assembly members from Mugu, film director Min Bahadur Bham and people from various walks of life.
Bajhang jeep accident: three dead, seven injured
Three passengers died on the spot when a jeep en route to Chuhawan of Durgathali rural municipality from Kadachaur of Kedarsyau rural municipality-7 in Bajhang met with an accident on Saturday. According to preliminary information from the police, the jeep ( Su Pa Pra 01-001 Cha 2644) met with the accident at around 4:00 pm, leaving three people dead and seven others seriously injured. The Sudur Pashim Province Police Office, Dhangadhi, said that adverse weather had earlier hampered efforts to airlift the injured by a Nepali Army helicopter. According to the District Administration Office (DAO), Bajhang’s information officer Satya Kumari Joshi, the local administration and the security agencies are actively engaged in rescue operations.
Flood displaces families at Kirtipur holding centre
Families taking shelter at the Kirtipur Holding Centre have been displaced after floodwaters inundated the facility following heavy rainfall. Water entered the holding centre at around 1 am on Saturday night, forcing residents to move their belongings to safer locations. The affected families have been temporarily relocated to Smriti Bhawan, located near the holding centre in Kirtipur. Following the incident, Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force have stepped up security in the area. Security personnel are assisting with rescue efforts, monitoring the affected site and supporting the management of displaced families.
Nepal Rastra Bank directs banks to reduce inactive accounts by December
Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has directed banks and financial institutions to prepare and implement an action plan to reduce the number of inactive accounts by the end of December. The directive was issued on Friday through a revised Integrated Directive, 2026, by the NRB’s Bank and Financial Institution Regulation Department. It applies to Class ‘A’ commercial banks, Class ‘B’ development banks and Class ‘C’ finance companies. Under the revised provision, banks must regularly notify customers through phone calls, SMS, email or other appropriate means before an account becomes inactive.
Man dies during treatment after self-immolation attempt in Buddhanagar
Ashwin Raut, who had attempted self-immolation in Buddhanagar, Kathmandu, has died while undergoing treatment at Bir Hospital. The 45-year-old had been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit after sustaining severe burn injuries in the incident. Hospital sources said Raut died during the course of treatment on Saturday. He had suffered burns to more than 50 percent of his body, according to officials.
Minister directs local governments to enforce slaughterhouse law within three months
Minister for Agriculture, Forests and Environment Geeta Chaudhary has directed local governments to effectively implement the Slaughterhouse and Meat Inspection Act, 1999, within the next three months. Speaking at a discussion with mayors and representatives of local governments in the Kathmandu Valley on Friday, the minister urged them to immediately begin the necessary procedures to enforce the law within the stipulated timeframe. Chaudhary said implementation of the Act is essential to ensure consumers’ right to safe, quality and inspected meat, noting that the issue is directly linked to public health.
Janaki Kumari Tuladhar assumes role of acting Chief Election Commissioner
Election Commissioner Janaki Kumari Tuladhar has assumed the responsibilities of acting Chief Election Commissioner following the retirement of acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari. Bhandari retired on July 7 after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65. As the senior-most commissioner, Tuladhar has taken over the role. Under Bhandari’s leadership, the by-election for a member of the House of Representatives was held on March 5. The five-member Election Commission currently has only two serving commissioners—Dr. Tuladhar and Commissioner Sagun Shumsher Jabara. Former Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya retired on April 18, while former Election Commissioner Ishwari Prasad Paudel completed his tenure on February 16, 2023.
RPP lawmaker Shahi says no law or power is greater than human life
Gyanendra Shahi, parliamentary party leader of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), has said that no law, position, power or popularity is greater than the life of a citizen. In a Facebook post written in a poetic style, Shahi expressed his views following the death of 25-year-old Ganesh Nepali of Soru Rural Municipality-1 in Mugu, who died while undergoing treatment after setting himself on fire outside the Department of Passports in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu. Shahi said laws are enacted to protect people’s lives, not to take them away. “Nothing is greater than life. Laws are made to safeguard life, not to end it,” he wrote.
Home Ministry expands disaster hotline 1234 to all 77 districts
The Ministry of Home Affairs has expanded its disaster hotline service to all 77 districts in a bid to improve the speed and effectiveness of emergency response, rescue coordination and public grievance handling. According to a ministry press release, the new toll-free hotline 1234 replaces the previously centralized disaster hotline 1149, which was operated only from the national level. Under the new system, calls made to 1234 from Kathmandu Valley—covering Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur—will be routed to the National Emergency Operation Centre at Singha Durbar. Calls from the remaining 74 districts will automatically be directed to the respective District Emergency Operation Centres.
Daunne traffic woes ease as Narayangadh–Butwal road project nears completion
The notorious traffic congestion that plagued the Daunne section of the Narayangadh–Butwal road during the monsoon season has significantly eased this year as the road expansion project enters its final phase. Until last year, even light rainfall, ongoing construction works, landslide clearance operations, or vehicle breakdowns would trigger hours-long traffic jams along the Daunne stretch. Thousands of travelers were often stranded on the road for extended periods during both the monsoon and winter seasons. However, with most of the road now blacktopped and construction nearing completion, traffic movement has become considerably smoother.
Parliamentary Hearing Committee invites complaints against EC nominees
The Parliamentary Hearing Committee has called for complaints against the three individuals recommended for appointment as the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners. Issuing a public notice on Saturday, the committee urged anyone with credible information, evidence or grounds indicating that the nominees are unsuitable for appointment to submit a complaint within 10 days. The notice covers Man Bahadur Karki, who has been recommended as Chief Election Commissioner, and Dr. Rajiv Subba and Guru Prasad Wagle, who have been recommended as Election Commissioners.
Three family members arrested over fatal khukuri attack in Khotang
Police have arrested three members of the same family on murder charges following the fatal khukuri attack on a 38-year-old man in Diprung Chuichumma Rural Municipality-1, Yamkha of Khotang district. The victim, Dhruba Adhikari of Moriya, died after being attacked with a khukuri during a dispute on Thursday. Those arrested are Tilak Bahadur Sarki, 57, his wife Bhotimaya Sarki, 52, and their daughter Sita Sarki, 22. According to District Police Office spokesperson and Police Inspector Nirajan Basnet, Tilak Bahadur was arrested immediately after the incident, while his wife and daughter were taken into custody on Friday. Police said Tilak Bahadur himself informed authorities after the incident. His wife and daughter were later arrested after the victim’s family filed a complaint against them.
Spain beat Belgium 2-1 to reach World Cup last four
Spain secured a place in the World Cup semi-finals after substitute Mikel Merino scored a dramatic 88th-minute winner to seal a 2-1 victory over Belgium. Fabian Ruiz gave Spain the lead in the 30th minute after converting a rebound when Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois denied Dani Olmo’s initial effort. Belgium responded before halftime, with Charles De Ketelaere heading in a cross from Timothy Castagne in the 41st minute to make it 1-1. Spain dominated possession for much of the match in Los Angeles but had to wait until the closing stages to find the decisive goal. The second half saw both goalkeepers make important saves before Courtois was forced off with an injury in the 71st minute. He was replaced by Senne Lammens.
