Police detain youths protesting for release of Gen-Z movement report

KATHMANDU: Police detained several youths on Monday during a protest demanding the immediate publication of the National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) investigation report related to the incidents of September 8 and 9, 2025.

The demonstration, organised by the National Gen-Z Citizens Campaign, was held near the NHRC office at Harihar Bhawan in Lalitpur.

Police intervened after protesters attempted to march toward the commission’s office, taking several youths into custody.

The protesters accused the commission of delaying the release of the report prepared on the incidents linked to the Gen-Z movement and demanded that the findings be made public immediately.

One youth staging a sit-in demanding publication of the report was also detained by police.

According to Gen-Z campaigner Rabi Kiran Hamal, the youth was forcibly removed by police.

Hamal condemned the arrests, calling them “inhumane” and “fascist,” and said it was unacceptable to suppress peaceful protesters seeking transparency.

He alleged that the report had been withheld for months under political pressure and questioned under whose direction it was being concealed.

Hamal also accused the commission of acting under government influence to protect former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, and security officials linked to the incident.

He demanded the immediate release of detained protesters, including Sunil Singh and Ajay Sodari, and called for full disclosure of the commission’s report.

Stating that “truth cannot be suppressed,” Hamal also demanded action against those responsible and justice for those killed during the movement.
