Shashank Koirala says upcoming General Convention will unite Nepali Congress

KATHMANDU: Dr Shashank Koirala, coordinator of the Nepali Congress Deuba faction, has said the party’s upcoming General Convention will help bring the party together.

Speaking at the inauguration of the provincial and regional conventions of Kathmandu Constituency No. 4, organised by the faction on Saturday, Koirala said the General Convention scheduled for December would be crucial for the party.

He said the convention would strengthen unity within the Nepali Congress and help it move forward collectively in the next elections.

Koirala said the party remained strong and that even if all its opponents united, they would not be able to defeat or weaken it. He also said the Nepali Congress would neither misuse state power nor allow others to do so.

While acknowledging that politics changes with time, Koirala stressed the need to maintain clear principles and urged party cadres not to stray from the right path.

Speaking at the programme, Nepali Congress leader Prakashman Singh said the leadership elected at the party’s 14th General Convention remained legitimate, which was why the 15th General Convention was being organised. He said declarations made by anyone at Tundikhel would not be recognised as legitimate while Sher Bahadur Deuba had not resigned as party president.

Noting that many leaders were aspiring for different positions, Singh urged the party to assign responsibilities to those who had contributed to its development.

Another party leader, Mohan Basnet, said leaders and cadres across the country were ready to fight for the party’s expansion and activity. He claimed that some leaders and cadres had joined the rival faction out of fear of disciplinary action and threats, adding that most would return to his side within a few days.

Basnet urged party members to remain alert to efforts to weaken the Nepali Congress and to move forward united.
