NEA prepares to ensure uninterrupted power supply during Tihar, Chhath

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has made special arrangements to ensure a reliable, regular and quality electricity supply during the upcoming Tihar and Chhath festivals.

The NEA has made preparations to keep electricity generation, transmission and distribution systems fully operational and deploy technical personnel on standby around the clock to prevent disruptions during the festive period.

A meeting of the NEA’s senior management team, chaired by Executive Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha, reviewed preparations for ensuring an uninterrupted power supply during Tihar and Chhath. The meeting discussed system operations, supply management and potential challenges that could affect electricity distribution during the festivals.

Similarly, a joint virtual meeting was held with heads of provincial and divisional offices under the Load Dispatch Centre (LDC), Grid Operation Department, and Distribution and Customer Service Directorate. The meeting focused on coordinating electricity supply management, monitoring system performance and mobilizing the necessary technical workforce.

Executive Director Shrestha directed the concerned office heads to make all necessary arrangements to prevent power disruptions during the festive period. He instructed them to keep technical teams ready to carry out immediate repairs and restore services in the event of any disruption.

He also directed the offices to complete pending inspection and maintenance work on transmission lines and distribution systems promptly to minimize the possibility of power outages. The concerned officials have also been instructed to ensure that calls received through the ‘No Light’ service are answered regularly and that consumer complaints are addressed without delay.

The NEA has estimated that electricity demand will reach around 1,700 megawatts during the evening of Laxmi Puja, the main day of Tihar. According to Executive Director Shrestha, domestic electricity production is expected to reach approximately 2,500 megawatts during the period, which will be sufficient to meet domestic demand.

The Authority will maintain close coordination among the LDC, Grid Operation Department and distribution centres to monitor electricity demand and supply throughout the festive period. Technical and managerial arrangements have also been put in place to identify potential system problems and address them promptly.

Meanwhile, the NEA has urged consumers to exercise caution while using electricity during Tihar and Chhath. It has advised households to inspect electrical appliances and wiring, avoid substandard electrical materials and seek assistance from qualified technicians to repair faulty wiring or electrical leakage rather than attempting repairs themselves.

Consumers have also been requested to contact their nearest NEA distribution centre or the relevant No Light service if they encounter electricity supply problems or require assistance.
