KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Lima Adhikari Acharya has urged the government to immediately address the hardship faced by consumers due to shortages of cooking gas.
Speaking during the zero hour of the House of Representatives on Monday, Acharya said citizens were being forced to queue for cooking gas with empty cylinders until midnight, calling the situation a sign of government negligence.
She said households were struggling to prepare even their daily meals while consumers were compelled to wait in long queues for gas.
Acharya also highlighted what she called a contradiction between Nepal’s energy situation and the shortage of cooking fuel.
“On one hand, electricity produced in the country is going to waste, while on the other, citizens are being forced to stand in queues for cooking gas until midnight,” she said.
She urged the government to prioritise alternative energy amid recurring disruptions in gas supplies. Rather than making people wait in queues for cylinders, she called for an immediate programme to distribute induction stoves and make electric cooking more accessible and affordable.
Acharya also urged the government to review policies related to electricity consumption if they were discouraging the use of electric cooking appliances.
She said making household cooking easier should be a government priority and called for the implementation of the party’s commitment of “domestic energy, domestic kitchens.”
“If the government genuinely wants to relieve citizens from the hardship caused by the gas shortage, it should now bring a programme to distribute induction stoves instead of making people stand in queues for gas cylinders,” she said.
