KATHMANDU: CPN-UML lawmaker Ain Mahar has expressed serious concern over the death of 25-year-old Ganesh Nepali, criticizing both the government and Kathmandu Metropolitan City for their handling of the incident.
Addressing the House of Representatives on Friday, Mahar said relatives, human rights activists and members of the public were outraged at Bir Hospital following Nepali’s death.
He alleged that family members were not allowed to meet Nepali during his treatment and that the body was not handed over immediately after his death.
The lawmaker also criticized the deployment of a large number of police personnel at the hospital, accusing the government of failing to manage the situation with due sensitivity.
Mahar argued that the state bore responsibility for creating conditions that could drive citizens to such extreme acts. He said growing frustration and perceived injustice among landless people and other sections of society had contributed to increasing public despair.
Referring to the historical case of Yogmaya Neupane, Mahar warned that such incidents impose serious political and moral responsibilities on the state.
He called for an impartial investigation into Nepali’s death, action against those found responsible, and said both the government and Kathmandu Metropolitan City should accept responsibility for the incident.
Concluding his remarks, Mahar strongly criticized the government and ended his speech by chanting the slogan, “Down with the government.”
