House of Representatives meeting postponed to 2 PM amid continued deadlock

KATHMANDU: The meeting of the House of Representatives scheduled for 11:00 am on Wednesday has been postponed to 2:00 p.m.

Issuing a notice, Parliament Secretary-General Mahaprasad Pandey informed that the meeting had been rescheduled.

Opposition parties have continued to obstruct parliamentary proceedings, demanding that Prime Minister Balen Shah personally appear in the House and respond to concerns over his remarks related to the Nepal–India border issue.

Efforts by Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane to break the deadlock through talks with opposition parties have so far failed to yield a consensus.

The opposition has insisted that if the Prime Minister does not address the House in person, a written statement from him must be submitted and read out by Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal.

However, the talks stalled after Lamichhane indicated that the Foreign Minister himself would respond, without necessarily presenting a written statement from the Prime Minister. Opposition parties rejected the proposal, preventing an agreement from being reached.

The parliamentary obstruction has continued for the past 10 days following Prime Minister Shah’s statement in the House suggesting that Nepal had also encroached on Indian territory, a remark that drew strong criticism from opposition lawmakers.

Discussions between Lamichhane and opposition leaders are ongoing in an effort to end the impasse and resume regular parliamentary business.
