KATHMANDU: The Department of Drug Administration has stated that there is a limited availability of some essential medicines used in cancer treatment and has published a list of health institutions and suppliers where these drugs are currently available to facilitate patient care.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, the department said that the availability of cancer drugs such as cisplatin injection and carboplatin injection has been affected due to disruptions in the global supply chain and other related factors.
It added that coordination is underway with relevant agencies, importers, and stakeholders to ensure the regular supply of these medicines. The department has also urged concerned institutions and companies with available stock to coordinate and ensure timely access for patients in need.
According to the notice, the medicines are available at Janaki Hospital in Nepalgunj, Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital in Biratnagar, Purwanchal Cancer Hospital in Birtamod, various pharmaceutical companies in Pokhara, Poonam Pharmacy in Dharan, Raj Drug Pvt. Ltd. in Bharatpur, and several institutions in Kathmandu including Taj Nepal Pharmaceuticals, Sijal Pharm, and Anmol Health Care.
The department has directed concerned health institutions to maintain clear records of stock and distribution of these medicines. It also said that patients and hospitals can coordinate with contact persons of the respective institutions for access and seek further information from the department if needed.
The announcement comes at a time when shortages of essential cancer drugs have raised concern among patients and hospitals, prompting authorities to publish available sources to ensure continuity of treatment.
