Finance Minister says vested groups targeting PM, himself over probe

KATHMANDU: Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle has alleged that both the Prime Minister and himself are being subjected to a coordinated political attack orchestrated by forces allegedly backed by groups involved in what he described as the country’s largest financial crime.

Speaking at a meeting of the House of Representatives’ Finance Committee on Wednesday during budget deliberations, Minister Wagle claimed that groups unsettled by the government’s investigation into large-scale financial crimes were attempting to encircle and target the leadership.

“We are investigating those involved in the biggest financial crime in Nepal’s history, and the case will reach the court in a few days,” he said. “Elements supported by those disgruntled groups are now attacking the Prime Minister and me.”

He further argued that the government’s campaign for good governance under the leadership of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) had not been well received by certain vested interests, which he suggested were behind the ongoing political pressure.

Wagle also urged members of parliament not to be influenced by such narratives or weaken the dignity of the sovereign parliament. “There is an attempt to create a storm in a teacup. I am ready to face it firmly,” he said.

Responding to media reports and opposition allegations that 16 pages were missing from the budget speech, the Finance Minister firmly rejected the claims, stating that no alterations had been made to the 460-page document.

He said misinformation was being spread to confuse the public temporarily and damage the credibility of the government’s fiscal presentation.

Clarification on vehicle import dispute

Addressing controversy over alleged irregularities in tax adjustments on vehicle imports through the Rasuwagadhi and Korala (Mustang) border points, Wagle said the Ministry of Finance, customs authorities, and the Armed Police Force had already deployed teams to Rasuwa to investigate the matter.

“Whatever has been claimed is exactly the opposite of reality. Taxes have actually decreased, and traders are facing difficulties,” he said. “Those rushing to clear consignments are being affected, while the state is benefiting.”

He also raised concerns about possible attempts to defame the Chinese electric vehicle brand BYD in connection with the controversy.

Calling on lawmakers to rely on facts and evidence, Wagle cautioned against reacting to media reports without verification. “Honourable members should not reduce their stature by chasing after what a few newspapers publish. This attempt to smear clean reputations is wrong at first sight,” he added.
