KATHMANDU: The Department of Commerce, Supply and Consumer Protection has intensified on-site inspections across the capital (Kathmandu) following reports of an artificial shortage of cooking gas in the market.
The Department said it has launched joint market monitoring operations in coordination with other relevant agencies, targeting producers, importers, distributors, sellers, hoarders, and service providers involved in essential and daily consumer goods.
According to the Department, the inspections aim to ease consumer hardship and bring those responsible for creating artificial scarcity under legal action. In recent days, consumers have faced difficulties in obtaining cooking gas, particularly due to false claims of supply shortages.
The Department stated that several businesses found violating the law have already been taken under action and warned that strict measures will be enforced against anyone found acting against prevailing laws.
Although the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has maintained that cooking gas supply remains adequate, consumers continue to report difficulties in accessing it. In response to the rising number of complaints, the Department has further stepped up its monitoring and enforcement activities.
