Nepali Congress postpones Sunday’s youth rally



KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress establishment faction has postponed its planned gathering scheduled for Sunday, citing the demise of former central committee member and senior journalist Homnath Dahal.

An emergency meeting of the party’s Central Working Committee held on Saturday under the chairmanship of Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka decided to defer the event. The party establishment said all formal program planned for Sunday have been suspended in mourning for Dahal.

The gathering, jointly organized by the party’s sister organizations and well-wisher groups, was to be held at the party’s central office in Sanepa as a ‘Grand Tarun, Student and Women’s Meet focused on the 15th General Convention and the upcoming general election.’ Party Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel said the program has been postponed until further notice.

Meanwhile, the party’s sister and well-wisher organizations have issued a joint statement informing all cadres and supporters about the postponement.

The development comes as a second special general convention of the Nepali Congress is set to take place in Kathmandu on Sunday and Monday under the leadership of General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma. Organizers of the special convention have claimed that a majority of general convention delegates will be in attendance.
