KATHMANDU: As the FIFA World Cup 2026 enters its decisive stage, the biggest question after the tournament title race is — who will claim the Golden Boot as the highest goal scorer?
The race has become one of the most competitive in World Cup history, with four of football’s biggest stars battling for the individual honor — Argentina captain Lionel Messi, France captain Kylian Mbappe, Norway striker Erling Haaland, and England captain Harry Kane.
Messi currently leads the Golden Boot standings with eight goals. Mbappe and Haaland are close behind with seven goals each, while Kane remains in contention with six goals.
In previous World Cups, seven goals were often enough to secure the Golden Boot. However, this year’s extraordinary scoring performances mean even eight goals may not be enough to guarantee the award.
Messi has used his experience and consistency to remain at the top, while Mbappe’s pace and attacking threat make him capable of overtaking the leader at any moment. Haaland has made a remarkable impact in his first World Cup campaign, scoring seven goals with his powerful finishing. Kane, the 2018 Golden Boot winner, is looking to repeat his previous success.
The Golden Boot winner is decided first by total goals scored. If players are level, assists become the deciding factor, followed by fewer minutes played. Mbappe currently has two assists, while Messi and Kane have one each. Haaland, despite having no assists, has impressed with his efficiency in front of goal.
Other players remain in the race, including France’s Ousmane Dembélé, Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal, and England’s Jude Bellingham, who have four goals each.
With the final approaching on July 19, every remaining match could change the Golden Boot standings. Will Messi add another individual achievement to his legendary career? Can Mbappe win the award for a second time? Will Haaland announce himself on the world stage with a historic debut? Or can Kane repeat his 2018 triumph?
The answer will be decided on the pitch, but the 2026 Golden Boot race is already shaping up as one of the most exciting battles in World Cup history.
