RPP demands resignation of Finance Minister over alleged tax rate changes in budget

KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has demanded the resignation of Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle, accusing him of arbitrary changes in tax rates mentioned in the budget for the fiscal year 2026/27.

Speaking at the House of Representatives meeting on Tuesday, RPP Whip Khusbu Oli said that it would be appropriate for the Finance Minister to step aside, at least temporarily.

During her remarks, Minister Wagle was present in Parliament and was seen smiling as the opposition raised concerns over the issue.

“Today the Finance Minister is present here, and he will likely clarify the matter in this House. However, the issue has become so serious that an impartial and credible investigation is now essential,” she said. “Until the investigation is completed, the Finance Minister should, on his own conscience and in the spirit of good governance, step away from his responsibilities to ensure fairness and accountability.”

Lawmakers from the RPP continued to press for an inquiry, stating that the alleged manipulation of tax rates undermines transparency in the national budget process.
