KATHMANDU: The National Assembly meeting was obstructed on Tuesday after lawmakers demanded the withdrawal of Prime Minister’s remarks regarding the Nepal–India border dispute.
As soon as the meeting began, National Assembly members stood up in protest, taking a firm stance that parliamentary proceedings would not move forward unless the Prime Minister corrected his statement. Following the continued obstruction, the meeting was postponed until June 11.
Earlier in the session, National Assembly member Narayan Dutta Mishra said that while citizens from both Nepal and India are seen engaging in farming activities across the border, Nepal has not encroached upon Indian territory.
He termed the Prime Minister’s statement on the highly sensitive border issue as objectionable and demanded that the Prime Minister himself appear in Parliament to clarify the matter.
Despite repeated appeals from National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal to allow the House to function, lawmakers continued their protest by standing in objection, forcing the meeting to be adjourned.
The session has now been scheduled to resume on Thursday.
