KMC declares Kathmandu free of street dwellers

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has declared its jurisdiction free of street dwellers.

Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol announced that Kathmandu had become free of street dwellers who survive through begging. The declaration was made under the campaign slogan, “KMC’s Responsibility to Care for Helpless Citizens.”

On the occasion, Acting Mayor Dangol signed an agreement with the Nepal Police, the District Administration Office, Kathmandu, and Manavsewa Ashram to ensure the effective implementation of the campaign.

According to the agreement, any helpless individuals found living on the streets or in public places in the coming days will be managed through an integrated support system.

The agreement was signed by Inspector General of Police Dan Bahadur Karki on behalf of the Nepal Police, Chief District Officer Ishwar Raj Paudel on behalf of the District Administration Office, Kathmandu, and Chairperson Ramji Adhikari on behalf of Manavsewa Ashram.

Since 2074 BS, KMC has been collaborating with Manavsewa Ashram to support and rehabilitate helpless street dwellers, spending an average of around Rs 20 million annually on the initiative.

Manavsewa Ashram is a non-profit social organization established in Hetauda, Makwanpur, on August 29, 2012. The organization is dedicated to making Nepal a street-dweller-free country by assisting vulnerable, impoverished, homeless, disabled, physically frail, and mentally or psychologically challenged individuals who are compelled to live in streets, public spaces, and other open areas.
