KATHMANDU: Director General of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), Dr Archana Shrestha, has said that in-depth studies and discussions are underway regarding the 2026 monsoon forecast and its possible impacts.
Speaking at a Monsoon Forum organised by the department, DG Shrestha said that the review of past monsoon patterns and data on rainfall and temperature trends for upcoming seasons will provide an important basis for policy formulation and development planning.
She said the department is currently carrying out weather forecasting based on available technology, human resources, research studies, and support from international meteorological and scientific institutions.
Highlighting the department’s long-term goal, she said DHM aims to develop seasonal forecasting for all four seasons of the year. She added that forecasts for three seasons have already been initiated, and preparations are underway to begin pre-monsoon forecasting as well.
According to her, global atmospheric systems such as El Niño, the Indian Ocean Dipole, and Arctic Oscillation have a significant influence on Nepal’s weather patterns, making further research on their interactions essential.
“Strengthening scientific research can make weather forecasting more reliable and effective,” she said.
DG Shrestha also said the department is working to expand forecasting beyond regional levels to a sub-regional system that can provide more localized weather predictions. She stressed the need for enhanced research, technological expansion, and skilled human resources to achieve this goal.
She further noted that climate change is increasing risks such as glacier melting, glacial lake outburst floods, and extreme weather events, making evidence-based planning crucial.
She added that budget has been allocated for glacier monitoring and climate studies, with support from the concerned ministry.
