KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has called on leaders of the faction outside the party establishment to end internal disputes and work together to strengthen the party.
Addressing the final day of the closed session of the party’s 15th General Convention at Khulamanch in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Thapa recalled the long contributions of senior leaders to the party and urged the rival faction to end the disputes and unite.
He said it was time to stop approaching the courts and wasting time and to bring the matter to an end.
Thapa recalled that after the court’s decision on April 17, he had made it clear that he would move ahead with the 15th General Convention rather than continue approaching the courts.
He said party members were free to disagree, raise questions and express opposition, but ultimately everyone must abide by the party’s rules, procedures and discipline.
Acknowledging that disputes and weaknesses remained in some districts and areas because of the pressure to complete the General Convention within the timeframe set by the court, Thapa pledged to address issues involving injustice and disputes.
He said all factionalism within the party had ended with the conclusion of the closed session.
With the conclusion of the General Convention, the party will now be run under a new system and procedures, he said. Thapa added that the number of office-bearers and central members had been increased to create space for young and new leaders within the party.
