Constitutional Council recommends Justice Manoj Kumar Sharma as next Chief Justice



KATHMANDU: A meeting of the Constitutional Council convened on Thursday afternoon at the call of Prime Minister Balen Shah has recommended Supreme Court Justice Manoj Kumar Sharma for appointment as the next Chief Justice of Nepal.

Sharma was recommended ahead of senior-most Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla to lead the country’s judiciary.

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Shah in his capacity as chairperson of the Constitutional Council, endorsed Sharma’s name for the top judicial post.

Sharma will formally assume office as Chief Justice after completing the parliamentary hearing process.

The meeting was attended by Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal, National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sobita Gautam, Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives Bhishma Raj Angdembe, and Deputy Speaker Rubi Kumari Thakur.

The council meeting was convened shortly after President Ram Chandra Poudel issued an ordinance related to the Constitutional Council on Tuesday.
