Bhadrakali Temple complex under reconstruction

KATHMANDU: Reconstruction of the Bhadrakali Temple complex in Kathmandu is progressing rapidly, with the project being carried out in the traditional Newari architectural style.

Bhadrakali is an ancient temple of significant historical and religious importance in Kathmandu. The reconstruction incorporates traditional Newari design and craftsmanship.

Several structures within the temple complex were damaged by the 2015 earthquake. Reconstruction began in June/July 2024, according to Kathmandu Metropolitan City. The project currently includes the reconstruction and renovation of the main temple as well as the surrounding patis and sattals.

The Department of Archaeology has taken responsibility for documenting the historic structures, craftsmanship and architectural features of the temple complex during the reconstruction process.

Tulsi-Ambuja JV has been awarded the reconstruction contract at a cost of Rs 348 million. The project is scheduled for completion within three years and includes the main temple and ‘patis’ and ‘sattals’ on the western, northern and southern sides of the complex.

According to Rabindra Rijal, a civil engineer at the Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s Department of Heritage and Tourism, the reconstructed structures will feature intricately carved doors, windows and wooden pillars, while traditional jhingti tiles will be used on the roofs.

Two blocks will be connected in the Bhrikutimandap area on the northern side, while three blocks will be constructed on the southern side. The total floor area of the buildings will be approximately 39,000 square feet.

Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Sunita Dangol said the reconstruction of the Bhadrakali Temple complex is not merely an infrastructure development project but also an important initiative to preserve and continue Kathmandu’s cultural, historical and religious heritage.

To coordinate and facilitate the reconstruction, a Temple Reconstruction Facilitation Committee has been formed under the coordination of Ashaman Sangat, coordinator of the Metropolitan City’s Heritage and Tourism Committee.

The committee includes Ward No. 11 Chair Hiralal Tandukar, Ward No. 22 Chair Chinikaji Maharjan, Urban Development Project member Baburam Bhattarai, Lumdhi Bhadrakali Temple Management Committee Chair Ganesh Bahadur Maharjan, former committee chair Gautam Dangol, and representatives from the Department of Archaeology and Guthi Sansthan.

The Metropolitan City said Kumari Rai, head of the Department of Heritage and Tourism, is serving as the committee’s member secretary. The reconstruction of the Bhadrakali Temple complex is expected to contribute to the preservation of Kathmandu’s important historical and religious heritage by retaining its traditional Newari architecture, carved wooden elements and original construction style.
