Protesters demand demolition of Chhaya Devi Complex over heritage concerns

KATHMANDU: A protest was held in Kathmandu on Thursday demanding the demolition of the Chhaya Devi Complex, with demonstrators claiming the commercial structure was built after encroaching on the historically significant Kamalpokhari pond.

The demonstration was organized at Maitighar Mandala by the Heritage Conservation Society and the Indigenous Newa Political Campaign.

Protesters argued that the complex was constructed by filling in the historic, cultural, archaeological, and religiously important public pond and called for the site to be restored to its original state.

Narayan Maharjan, a member of the Heritage Conservation Society, said the protest aimed to pressure the court to order the demolition of the commercial complex, arguing that a heritage site of historical importance had been destroyed for commercial purposes.

The protesters also vowed to continue their campaign until the 11th-century Kamalpokhari is restored to its original condition.
