Iran reviewing US proposal aimed at ending conflict

TEHRAN: Iran has said it is still reviewing a US proposal intended to end the ongoing conflict, following reports that Washington and Tehran may be nearing an agreement.

US-based news outlet Axios reported on Wednesday that the White House believes it is close to finalising a 14-point memorandum of understanding with Iran.

However, a senior Iranian lawmaker dismissed the reported proposal as merely a “wish list”, while a spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry said Tehran would convey its response to the US proposal through Pakistani mediators, according to BBC.

Pakistan’s foreign minister said Islamabad was working to turn the current ceasefire into a lasting end to the war. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump stated that the US had held “very good talks with Iran in the last 24 hours” and suggested that an agreement could be reached.

According to Axios, the proposed memorandum is a one-page document outlining 14 points that could provide the basis for broader nuclear negotiations.

Reported provisions include a suspension of Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme, the easing of sanctions, and the restoration of unrestricted transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

The report cited two US officials and two additional unnamed sources familiar with the discussions, noting that many of the proposed terms would depend on a final agreement being achieved.

Reuters also reported that two sources briefed on the mediation efforts between the US and Iran had confirmed details initially published by Axios, although the proposal itself has not been publicly released.
