Congress candidate Sunil Bahadur Thapa elected unopposed to National Assembly

MORANG: Nepali Congress candidate Sunil Bahadur Thapa has been elected unopposed to the National Assembly during the nomination process held on Wednesday for the election scheduled on January 25.

Thapa, who filed his candidacy in the open category on behalf of the alliance comprising the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and the Janata Samajbadi Party, secured the seat without contest.

In Koshi Province, three candidates had filed nominations. Given the CPN-UML’s strong position in the province, it took two seats, while the Nepali Congress secured one seat, which was won unopposed by Sunil Bahadur Thapa, son of Surya Bahadur Thapa.

The Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’-led Nepali Communist Party did not field a candidate in the open category against Thapa, leading to his unopposed election, election officer Bhishma Raj Prasai said.

Uddhav Thapa served as Thapa’s proposer, while Regina Bhattarai was the supporter. From the UML, Roshni Meche, who previously worked at the secretariat of former prime minister KP Sharma Oli, filed her candidacy in the women’s category, and Som Portel filed in the Dalit category.

Meche’s proposer was Shobha Chemjong and supporter Srijana Rai, while Portel’s proposer was Chhabi Chundal and supporter Ekraj Karki.

Candidate registration for the National Assembly election is underway across the country on Wednesday. In Madhesh Province, Mahanta Thakur has filed his candidacy on behalf of the Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal.
