Kathmandu Valley air pollution worsens as dry season begins

KATHMANDU: Air pollution levels in the Kathmandu Valley have risen with the onset of the dry season, with several areas recording unhealthy air quality.

According to IQAir, a Switzerland-based air quality monitoring platform, Kathmandu recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 114 on Friday, November 6, placing it in the ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’ category.

Meanwhile, data from Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s air quality monitoring dashboard showed elevated pollution levels across several locations on Thursday evening. AQI readings included 141 in Swayambhu, 141 in Balaju, 150 in Teku, 156 in Dallu, 146 in Thapathali, 131 in Asan, 157 in Kamaladi, 127 in Chabahil and 158 in Lainchaur.

The readings indicate that air pollution levels vary considerably across the valley, with some locations recording unhealthy air quality and others reaching levels considered unhealthy for sensitive groups.

The metropolitan city has urged the public and concerned authorities to take measures to reduce activities that contribute to air pollution.

Reduced rainfall during the dry season allows dust and fine particulate matter to remain suspended in the atmosphere for longer periods, contributing to deteriorating air quality.

Children, older people, individuals with respiratory conditions and those suffering from chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable to the health effects of air pollution. They are advised to take necessary precautions and limit exposure when pollution levels are high.

Meanwhile, air pollution in India’s capital, New Delhi, has also reached severe levels. According to India’s official Air Quality Early Warning System, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium recorded an AQI of 417 on Friday morning, placing it in the severe category.

Under India’s AQI classification, readings between 401 and 500 are considered severe. At this level, air pollution can affect even healthy people, while posing more serious health risks to those with existing medical conditions.
