Lawmakers seek govt. discussion on political appointments

KATHMANDU: Members of Parliament have called for a discussion with the government over recent political appointments, expressing concerns about a lack of inclusiveness in the selection process.

The demand was raised during Thursday’s meeting of the Federal Parliament’s Committee for Monitoring and Evaluation of the Implementation of the Directive Principles, Policies and Obligations of the State at Singha Durbar.

During the meeting, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Ramesh Prasai said the government’s new political appointments, made after revoking previous ones, lacked adequate representation of diverse communities.

He argued that citizens should experience inclusiveness through the state’s actions, not merely through constitutional provisions or policy commitments. Prasai also said the representation of Madhesis, Dalits, Tharus, and other marginalized communities in state institutions remained deeply disappointing.

Similarly, CPN-UML lawmaker Prof. Dr. Pushparaj Kandel said the committee should also deliberate on issues such as the impact of social media, past treaties and agreements, the private sector, cooperatives, regional development, and resource distribution.

Nepali Congress lawmaker Gita Gurung said widespread dissatisfaction and complaints had emerged regarding the new appointments and urged the committee to draw the government’s attention to the issue.

She also stated that the security mechanism appeared to have failed in responding to the incidents of Bhadra 23 and 24, as well as recent unrest in Sunsari and other parts of Madhesh Province.

The committee also formed a five-member subcommittee, coordinated by lawmaker Dr. Surendra Chaudhary, to investigate the facts surrounding the Sunsari incident.
