KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress has decided to strongly raise the issue of the Constitutional Council ordinance in Parliament, expressing serious disagreement with the government’s move.
The decision was taken during a parliamentary party meeting held at Singha Durbar on Wednesday. Party President Gagan Thapa said lawmakers have been instructed to firmly present the party’s stance in the House.
Thapa said Congress lawmakers will play an active role in pressuring the government to amend provisions introduced through the ordinance via parliamentary processes.
He accused the government of attempting to centralize control over constitutional bodies through the ordinance, alleging that it was designed to enable unilateral decisions by the executive.
Thapa further claimed that the decision on who would be appointed as Chief Justice had already been made, and that the ordinance was brought in to push that choice through.
He stated that while the party would not obstruct actions taken within constitutional limits, it would strongly oppose any move that violates the constitution.
Thapa also criticized the government’s recent actions, saying they indicate confusion within the leadership.
In addition, he objected to the handling of landless Dalits and squatters, accusing the government of resorting to “bulldozer tactics” instead of ensuring proper identification and settlement, and urged authorities to uphold their responsibilities toward citizens.
