Bird flu detected at 23 locations within a month

KATHMANDU: Bird flu has been detected at 23 locations during the month of Chait, according to the Department of Livestock Services. Director General Dr. Umesh Dahal confirmed the development.

The first cases were reported on March 20 (Chait 6) in Sundarharaicha and Urlabari municipalities of Koshi Province. Since then, infections have been recorded at 12 locations in Sunsari, seven in Morang, two in Jhapa, and one each in Chitwan and Kathmandu.

To contain the spread, authorities have culled around 104,000 domestic birds in the affected areas. Bird flu was also detected in a crow within the premises of Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu.

Dr. Dahal said the import and export of poultry have been restricted following outbreaks in Sunsari, Jhapa, and Morang. The government is providing 75 percent compensation to farmers for birds culled due to the infection.
