Minister Ghising prioritizes solar energy, unveils new standards for canals

KATHMANDU: Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Kulman Ghising has announced that the government has prepared new standards and procedures to promote solar energy as a priority.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 25th General Assembly of the Nepal Solar Power Producers Association in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Minister Ghising said the new framework allows solar panels to be installed on irrigation canals. The standards and procedures are currently in the approval stage.

“Once approved by the Cabinet, we will involve the private sector to generate solar power on irrigation canals and move the process forward,” Ghising said.

The minister also expressed dissatisfaction with recent criticisms regarding electricity purchase agreements with India. He said some leaders and journalists, despite lacking expertise in power trading, have accused the government of selling electricity cheaply and buying it at high prices.

Ghising emphasized that such misinformation undermines Nepal’s electricity trade and called for informed discussion on the issue.
