KATHMANDU: The Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association has reduced egg prices, offering some relief to consumers who have been facing high rates. The new prices came into effect from Tuesday, with a reduction of Rs 90 per crate.
According to Association President Binod Pokharel, under the revised rates, farmers will now receive Rs 460 per crate for medium-sized eggs, down from the previous Rs 550. Similarly, the price of large eggs has been reduced from Rs 565 to Rs 475 per crate.
Pokharel attributed the price drop primarily to an increase in production and a decrease in consumption. “Recently, cold weather has led to schools and colleges being closed, reducing regular egg consumption. Demand from hotels and restaurants has also fallen as the tourist season is not active,” he said.
He added that many older layer chickens are not being sold, which has led to higher egg production at farms. “Eggs are being produced, but consumption has not kept pace with the increase, resulting in a market surplus,” Pokharel explained.
The reduction comes a month after egg prices had reached record highs last month, providing some relief to consumers and retailers alike.
