KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress (NC) on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Balen Shah-led government, accusing it of failing to deliver good governance, transparency, and accountability despite enjoying a near two-thirds majority.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, party spokesperson Devraj Chalise accused the government of facing a moral crisis, political incompetence, and a growing crisis of public trust.
He said that despite enjoying a near two-thirds majority, the government was attempting to divert public attention instead of addressing the country’s pressing problems.
The Nepali Congress made it clear that it does not seek to destabilize the government, but stressed that the administration must function in accordance with the Constitution, democratic values, and principles of good governance.
The party also said the government must be accountable on issues such as passport procurement, the management of landless settlers and squatters, the controversy surrounding Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, and matters related to the rules and procedures of the House of Representatives.
“The people are not looking for slogans; they are looking for results,” the Congress said. “The government must be transparent and accountable and should correct its course.”
The Congress further raised serious questions about the government’s intentions and decision-making process in the passport procurement case.
The party stated that despite the submission of a lower price offer, the government had failed to provide clear answers to concerns regarding the relationship between the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, his advisers, and the company involved.
The Congress also demanded that the government disclose the truth regarding allegations that pressure was exerted on officials of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority through the executive office.
