Govt forms probe committee into 779 seized electric vehicles over suspected revenue leakage

KATHMANDU: The government has formed a high-level committee to conduct a detailed investigation into 779 electric vehicles seized on suspicion of revenue leakage.

The vehicles were confiscated from various locations by the Armed Police Force Nepal amid suspicions of customs and tax evasion.

Acting on a special directive from the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, a joint investigation committee has been formed comprising representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Department of Customs Nepal, the Nepal Police, and the Armed Police Force.

According to Prime Minister Balen Shah’s press and research advisor Deepa Dahal, the government moved swiftly to form the committee in view of good governance and revenue protection priorities.

She said the committee has already begun on-site inspection of the seized vehicles and has started preliminary investigation work.

“Given the large number of vehicles, detailed verification of customs and tax documents may take some time. We request patience and assure that due process is being followed,” Dahal said.

She added that the government remains committed to strengthening the national economy and ensuring strict enforcement of laws related to revenue collection and customs compliance.

Authorities said the investigation will proceed in coordination with relevant agencies to verify documentation and determine whether legal violations occurred in the import and distribution of the vehicles.
