World Environment Day being observed today



KATHMANDU: World Environment Day 2026 is being observed across the country today with a variety of programs aimed at raising awareness about environmental protection and sustainable development.

This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme, “The Basis of a Prosperous Future: Climate- and Nature-Friendly Development,” with activities scheduled throughout the week.

On the occasion, the Department of Environment is organizing a special programme in Lalitpur. Minister for Agriculture, Forests and Environment Geeta Chaudhary is scheduled to attend the main event as the chief guest.

According to the Department, representatives from various government agencies, development partners, environmental organizations, and other stakeholders will participate in the programme.

Director General of the Department of Environment Gyanraj Subedi said World Environment Day is being observed to enhance public awareness about environmental conservation, address the challenges posed by climate change, and promote nature-friendly development.

The Department has also announced that a range of awareness-raising and environmental protection activities will be conducted across the country as part of the celebrations.
