KATHMANDU: Internal dissent in the Nepali Congress has reached the level of provincial committees.
On Monday, five provincial committee chiefs attending the central executive committee meeting opposed the special convention announced by General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, saying its justification has ended. They supported the proposal of acting Chairperson Purna Bahadur Khadka to hold the regular 15th general convention from May 11.
Far-West Province Committee Chair Bir Bahadur Balayar, along with Koshi Chair Uddhav Thapa, Madhesh Chair Krishna Prasad Yadav, Bagmati Chair Indra Baniya, and Karnali Chair Lalitjung Shahi, issued a joint statement rejecting the special convention.
Balayar added that discussions are ongoing with Gandaki Chair Shukraraj Sharma and Lumbini Chair Amarsingh Pun, noting that Lumbini’s chair is aligned with their stance, while Gandaki’s chair requested more time and will decide by January 8.
He highlighted that under current circumstances, the party must uphold its official position, and the central executive committee has already declared that the special convention is no longer justified.
