Pre-monsoon season sees above-average rainfall across Nepal

KATHMANDU: The country has recorded higher-than-average rainfall so far during the pre-monsoon season, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. Meteorologist Binu Maharjan reported that the rainfall until Tuesday has already exceeded the seasonal average.

“About 29.5 percent of the expected rainfall has occurred so far, whereas normally only around 20 percent would be expected by this time,” Maharjan said. “The pre-monsoon period runs from Falgun 15 to Jestha 15. During this period, approximately 226 millimeters of rainfall is expected, of which 77.5 millimeters has already fallen as of Tuesday.”

The department also noted generally cloudy conditions in the current weather system. Temperatures have risen compared to Tuesday, with Kathmandu and the surrounding valley recording a maximum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, up from 22 degrees Celsius previously.

Meteorologist Maharjan said the weather will remain mostly clear until Thursday, with the possibility of rainfall returning from Friday. Meanwhile, the department urged the public to stay alert due to the variable weather conditions.
