Nepali Congress claims 8 seats in upcoming National Assembly polls

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress has claimed eight out of 18 seats in the upcoming National Assembly election scheduled for January 25.

According to party sources, the claim comes as Nepali Congress holds parallel discussions with both the CPN-UML and Nepali Communist Party to explore potential alliances.

During Monday’s Central Working Committee meeting in Sanepa, Acting Party President Purna Bahadur Khadka briefed members on the preparations for the National Assembly polls and highlighted ongoing discussions with other parties regarding seat-sharing arrangements.

Committee member Sujata Koirala told journalists that Khadka stressed the need for Nepali Congress to secure eight seats to strengthen its negotiating position with other parties. She added that even though the party’s general assembly had previously decided against forming alliances in general elections, this did not apply to the National Assembly elections.

Nepali Congress spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat said the party’s leadership is engaged in talks with UML, NCP, and Janata Samajbadi Party leaders.

“Without alliances, the outcome would be uncertain. Our strong position gives us leverage, but cooperation with other parties is essential. A decision may be reached by tomorrow,” he said.
