KATHMANDU: Heavy rainfall is forecast in parts of Rasuwa and other areas affected by the recent Bhotekoshi floods this afternoon, raising concerns for ongoing rescue and relief operations, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
Meteorologist Binu Maharjan said heavy rain is likely in the hilly areas of Rasuwa, which was severely affected by the Bhotekoshi flash flood, while moderate rainfall is expected in other flood-affected areas.
“Moderate rainfall is occurring in various parts of the country. In the past six hours, the highest rainfall of 34 millimetres was recorded at the weather station in Anarmani Birta, Jhapa,” Maharjan said.
The department said the country remains under the influence of monsoon winds, with the monsoon low-pressure trough located near its average position. Weather conditions are currently generally cloudy across the country, with light rain occurring at one or two places in Koshi, Gandaki and Karnali provinces.
This afternoon, generally cloudy conditions are expected nationwide, with light to moderate rain and snowfall accompanied by thunder and lightning likely in some mountainous and many hilly areas.
Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is also expected at many places in the Tarai areas of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces, some places in the Tarai areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, and a few places in Madhesh Province. Gusty winds are also possible in some parts of the Tarai in Lumbini Province.
The department has forecast heavy rain at one or two places in the mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, as well as in hilly areas across the country and the Tarai areas of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces.
Generally cloudy conditions are expected to continue tonight, with light to moderate rain and thunder and lightning likely in some mountainous and hilly areas, along with snowfall in higher elevations. Light to moderate rain is also likely at a few places in the Tarai areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces and at one or two places in Madhesh Province.
The department has warned that moderate to heavy rainfall could continue for the next three days, underscoring the need for caution in flood- and landslide-prone areas.
