KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah has said that building an aware and responsible society against discrimination is a shared responsibility of all, emphasizing equality, respect, and human dignity.
Issuing a message on the occasion of the National Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and Untouchability on Thursday, Mayor Shah said these values must be translated into practice through collective effort.
Recalling that the then House of Representatives had declared Nepal a caste-based untouchability-free nation on June 4, 2006, two decades ago, he noted that the day is observed in remembrance of that historic commitment to equality, dignity, and social justice.
He also expressed deep respect for the contributions made by the Dalit community in social, cultural, and economic development of the country over generations.
“Legal provisions alone are not enough for ending caste-based discrimination and untouchability. A positive transformation in social thinking, behavior, and culture is essential for its effective elimination,” Shah said in his message.
He further reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening social justice, equality, and inclusive development through the full implementation of constitutional provisions.
Stating that the government has prioritized the protection of traditional skills of the Dalit community, along with income generation and technological enhancement, Shah called for a unified national effort to eliminate discrimination.
He concluded by urging all Nepalis to work together toward building an equitable, civilized, and dignified society, wishing that the national day inspires stronger social harmony and mutual respect.
