NAWALPUR EAST: Authorities have begun burying unidentified bodies washed up along the Narayani River in Nawalpur East following the devastating Bhotekoshi floods.
The burial process was initiated after the number of recovered bodies exceeded the capacity of both permanent and temporary morgues. Authorities said the bodies are being managed in accordance with scientific procedures based on standards set by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
On Sunday, 20 bodies kept at Madhyabindu Provincial Hospital were buried after DNA samples were collected, identification numbers assigned and the necessary procedures completed.
The bodies were buried at Jyotikunj Community Forest in Kawasoti Municipality-3 with the assistance of Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and municipal police, according to Anil Pandit, information officer and Deputy Superintendent of Police at the District Police Office, Nawalpur East.
The District Administration Office said the bodies buried underground will be preserved safely and handed over to their families if they are identified later.
Bodies recovered during search and rescue operations following floods and landslides in Rasuwa and other affected areas are undergoing identification and DNA testing at Gaindakot Municipal Hospital and Madhyabindu Provincial Hospital.
A total of 194 bodies have so far been recovered along the riverbank between Gaindakot and Binayi Tribeni. Of these, nine have been identified and handed over to their relatives.
