Kathmandu Metropolitan monitors spas, massage centers in Thamel

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City has conducted inspections of massage centers and spas operating in the Thamel area as part of efforts to curb child sexual exploitation and labor abuse.

The monitoring was carried out on Wednesday by the Human Trafficking and Transportation Control Committee of Ward No. 26 in coordination with Anahat Nepal, Nepal Police, and the Metropolitan Police.

According to committee coordinator Shanta Prajapati, the inspection found several spas and massage centers operating without registration and others running in violation of the prescribed code of conduct.

The ward office launched the initiative in response to complaints that girls under the age of 18 were being employed and, in some cases, exploited in the hotel, lodge, guest house, restaurant, spa, and massage sectors within the ward under various pretexts.

“Engaging children under 18 in hazardous work, labor exploitation, or the sex trade is an inexcusable and punishable offense under Nepali law,” Prajapati said. She warned that anyone found involved in such activities would face legal action under the Human Trafficking and Transportation (Control) Act and the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City said it will continue regular inspections of massage parlors and spas operating in the Thamel area.

Authorities have also instructed businesses to maintain official identification documents verifying the age of employees and to display information boards prohibiting child labor and sexual exploitation at their premises.

Prajapati urged the public to immediately inform the ward office or the nearest police station if they become aware of incidents involving child sexual exploitation or labor abuse.

“Making our ward child-friendly and safe is our primary responsibility. No one who jeopardizes the future of children will be spared,” she said.
