KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has said that partisan influence in the education sector has become one of Nepal’s biggest challenges.
Speaking at a Green Table discussion organised by the Nepali Congress Policy Research Foundation at the party’s central office in Sanepa on Friday, Thapa distinguished between politics in education and the politicisation of educational institutions.
He argued that the growing practice of appointing individuals based on political affiliation rather than merit has become deeply rooted across the country.
According to Thapa, appointments to school management committees, principal positions, and teaching posts are often driven by the desire to place “one’s own people” rather than selecting the most qualified candidates.
He stressed that Nepal’s education sector must move away from the culture of favouring political loyalists and instead prioritise competence and merit.
Thapa also called on teachers to fulfil their professional responsibilities while making greater contributions to building a prosperous and developed Nepal.
