Harka Sampang demands PM Balendra Shah clarify remarks

KATHMANDU: Shram Sankriti Party Chair Harka Sampang has strongly criticized Prime Minister Balendra Shah over his statement in Parliament on Sunday, demanding that the Prime Minister appear before the House and provide clarification.

Speaking during Tuesday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Sampang said the Prime Minister should correct the remarks he made regarding Nepal’s border issues.

“The statement made by a person holding the office of Prime Minister on May 31 must be corrected,” Sampang said.

Citing Rule 4(1) of the House regulations, he argued that every member is required to attend parliamentary meetings and register their presence. He called for verification of whether Prime Minister Shah had fulfilled this obligation.

Sampang further stated that if the Prime Minister had failed to attend and register his presence as required, constitutional provisions concerning the tenure of the Prime Minister should be examined. Referring to Article 77(1)(g) of the Constitution, he claimed that the matter warranted scrutiny.

He also urged Parliament to review the Prime Minister’s attendance record, saying, “It should be examined how many times the Prime Minister has attended and signed in at House meetings.”

The Shram Sankriti Party leader additionally questioned the Prime Minister’s remarks suggesting that Nepal had allegedly encroached on Indian territory.

“According to the Prime Minister’s statement, it must be clarified where exactly Nepal has encroached upon India’s border,” Sampang said.

Highlighting accountability in governance, he argued that governments must not make mistakes in matters of national importance.

“A government should not make mistakes, nor should it be allowed to do so. If it does, it fails in its responsibility,” he said.

Sampang added that if the Prime Minister’s statement was found to be incorrect, he should stand before Parliament and apologize to Nepal’s 30 million citizens.
