PM Balen Shah to attend first House meeting but will skip address

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Balen Shah is set to attend the first meeting of the House of Representatives, though he will not deliver an address, according to his secretariat.

Shah, known for maintaining a low public speaking profile, will be present as the newly elected House convenes following the elections held on March 5. While he will not speak, several key leaders are scheduled to address the meeting.

A preparatory meeting held at Singha Durbar on Wednesday under the coordination of Arjun Narsingh KC reached a consensus for top leaders to speak during the session.

Among those scheduled to address the House are Rabi Lamichhane from the Rastriya Swatantra Party and Ram Bahadur Thapa from the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), who has recently been selected as the parliamentary party leader.

The Nepali Congress has yet to finalize who will speak on its behalf, as the party is still unable to elect its parliamentary party leader. Internal disputes persist between factions aligned with Sher Bahadur Deuba and Gagan Thapa, with some lawmakers reportedly split between the camps.

Other leaders scheduled to address the House include Harka Sampang, Pushpa Kamal Dahal from the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), and Gyanendra Shahi from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party.

Despite his presence, Shah’s decision not to address the meeting has drawn attention, as the first sitting is expected to set the tone for parliamentary proceedings in the new term.
